project description

Mill Spring is a rural village located in southern Wayne County, Missouri.  The town originally used a local spring as its water source leading up to the construction of its water system in the 1950’s.  The current water system provides potable water to residents, in addition to Wayne County Public Water Supply District #3 to the north.  The Wayne County PWSD #3 extension was built in 2008 and uses a little more than half of the Mill Spring’s daily production.

An assortment of problems plague the Mill Spring system since its inception.  The single-source production well provides a dependable deep-rock source of potable water.  However, the system lacks any sort of backup supply source or even emergency power.  Heartland Engineering is providing engineering services to help Mill Spring design and implement a series of system upgrades.  The $4,300,000 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding was secured through our firm’s staff to help design and administer construction services. The improvements include a second deep-rock water well, paired with a new well house and ground storage tank. The system’s existing tank and well house will be rehabilitated to bring them up to current-day standards.  Additionally, the distribution system design includes the replacement of some mains along with line-looping, hydrant replacement and valve installation.  Lead service line inspection will be completed during the construction to alleviate worries about the use of lead within the system.

Mill Springs water system has come a long way from providing residents access to water from a local spring.  The improvements will safeguard the town’s drinking water for decades to come.  Heartland is happy to be on-board as the system designer keeping our client’s water consumption safe.
