project description

Drinking Water Treatment and Distribution Improvements for the City of Hayti

Hayti is a city of approximately 2,400 residents in southeastern Missouri. The city provides drinking water distribution and wastewater collection for its residents as well as to the 360 residents of the neighboring Hayti Heights.  Much of Hayti’s distribution system was constructed in piece-meal fashion using cast-iron, galvanized, and asbestos-cement pipe.  The resulting  system of dissimilar materials left the city with a network of undersized and poorly designed lines.  After many years of only being able to afford routine maintenance, most of the water valves and hydrants were no longer functional.  Many water meter installations were found to be serving homes that are physically located as far as two blocks away.  The existing layout became locally known as the “spiderweb” and presented an operational nightmare.

Staff with Heartland Engineering have been providing engineering design services for the city of Hayti for over two decades.  This has resulted in improvements to the city’s drinking water, wastewater, stormwater and street utilities.  Most recently, Heartland Engineering was selected by Hayti to administer a funding package through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).  Our firm was able to help the City to secure a $5,000,000 in grant dollars that has allowed the city to replace large portions of the  southern distribution system, where the majority of the mismatched lines are located.  The replacement project included approximately 5-miles of new 6” SDR-21 PVC mains, valves, hydrants, and meter relocations.  The project also included basic updates and repairs to the sand filtration water treatment plant that was originally designed by Bob Summers back in 2009.

Heartland looks forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with Hayti to continuing to provide engineering services that result in safe and dependable utility services for many years into the future.
